On March 26th, 2019 the Ontario Government announced the launch of the next stream of funding under the Investing in Canada Infrastructure Program. The Investing in Canada Infrastructure Program (ICIP) is a $30 billion, 10-year infrastructure program cost-shared between federal, provincial and municipal governments. There are four streams that the funding will be distributed between:

  • Rural and Northern - application deadline May 14, 2019
  • Public Transit - stream opens April 2, 2019
  • Green
  • Community, Culture and Recreation

On April 2, 2019, the Ontario Government is rolling out its second intake with the Public Transit Stream.

Project Type(s):

  • Construction, expansion, and improvement of public transit networks.

  • There are 85 eligible municipalities located outside of the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area (GTHA)
  • Funding is allocated to transit systems based on their share of total transit ridership in Ontario as per the 2015 Canadian Urban Transit Association Fact Book

  • A total of $1.62 billion in joint provincial and federal funding is allocated specifically for public transit projects

  • On April 2, 2019, communities can begin to nominate their most critical public transit projects.
  • Deadline for applications is not mentioned in the announcement, but the Rural and Northern Stream was allocated 8 weeks for nominations.
  • A briefing from PSD will follow on April 2 when more details are announced.

Preparing for the first intake:

Eligible Ontario municipalities can prepare for the intake of the Public Transit Stream by reviewing their prioritization of critical public transit projects and starting to review project alignment with the Provincial Policy Statement, the municipality's Official Plan, Strategic Plan, and Transit Master Plan.

PSD's team of policy analysts is available to assist municipalities with preparation for the public transit application intake.
