Canada's Open City Champions: Finalists

Canada's Open City Champions: Finalists

Congratulations to our Open City Champions Finalists! PSD has been recognizing leading organizations in open data for the last four years through our Open Cities Index program - Canada's first national benchmarking initiative recognizing municipal open data programs. Through the Open City Champions Awards, we are now recognizing individuals.

In 2017, PSD launched a call for nominations for the Open City Champions Awards, with the following three categories for nominees:

Open City Champion – Community Leader
A member of your community that has contributed to the development, improvement and/or continuous support of your municipality's open data initiative. Your nominee may be in the public, private or non-profit sector, but should not be a municipal staff member.

Open City Champion – City Administrative Leader
A municipal staff member that has contributed to the development, improvement and/or continuous support of your municipality's open data initiative. Your nominee does not necessarily have to be a part of your municipality's open data team, as municipal staff from various departments often play significant roles in assisting with the launch of a new open data program or the continuous support of an existing program.

Open City Champion – City Council Leader
A city/town council member that has contributed to the development, improvement and/or continuous support of your municipality's open data initiative. Your nominee may have championed your open data initiative on council.

PSD received dozens of nominations for these awards from across Canada. Thank you to all of our nominators that put forth such detailed and passionate submissions. It is evident that Canada has skilled and committed champions for open data from coast to coast.

Under each category, our panel of judges reviewed each submission for the following criteria:

1) Did the nominee provide an outstanding contribution to the development, improvement and/or continuous support of their community's open data initiative?

2) Did the nominee stand out among all nominees in their category?

3) Did the nominee receive multiple nominations?

After reviewing all submissions, each judge submitted their top three nominees under each award category. Points were assigned to each nominee according to their ranking. Points were added for each nominee to determine the finalists for the Open City Champions Awards. The Champion under category will be announced live from Ottawa on May 11th.

We would like to extend a huge thank you to our judges Moses Iziomon, Senior Project Advisor, Open Government, Treasury Board of Canada Secretariat, Kevin Tuer, VP Strategic Initiatives, Communitech and the Research Team at PSD for their time spent reviewing all the nominations.
