In 2012, the province of Ontario introduced a new program to help municipalities plan for the future and start to address the mounting infrastructure backlog. Ontario's Municipal Infrastructure Investment Initiative (MIII) has required municipal governments, for the first time, to complete comprehensive Asset Management Plans (AMPs) in order to be eligible for new capital funds. For those communities in Ontario with fewer than 20,000 residents, the province provided capacity funds to assist local governments with the development of their AMPs.
