AMO Conference Review 2018

Falling between the Ontario provincial election last spring and the upcoming municipal elections in Ontario this fall, the province’s mayors and city councillors gathered last week at the Association of Municipalities of Ontario (AMO) annual conference in Ottawa. More than 1,900 of Ontario’s local government leaders made the pilgrimage to the nation’s capital, not only to attend informative conference sessions and network with peers, but also to interface with a brand-new provincial government, participating in caucus sessions with newly minted cabinet ministers. There was an underlying sentiment of uncertainty at the conference, with questions abounding about the next steps that the provincial government might take in municipal affairs policy, how the upcoming federal election might further change intergovernmental relations in Canada, and how rapidly changing events on the global stage could impact our local governments.
